I recently read an article that I thought was interesting on Integrative Medicine. I thought I'd share a few of the they points over the next few blogs posts.
Many people believe that Integrative Medicine is the future of medicine. As the costs of traditional medicine continue to increase, sometimes patients feel dissatisfied with the outcomes they receive. Alternatively, integrative medicine may provide a solution. Integrative medicine favors evidence-based use of low-tech, low-cost interventions. It's goal is to care for the "whole-person". As the mindfulness movement progresses many people are drawn by this perspective. Integrative medicine strives to join patients and healthcare providers in partnership. Patients assume a more active role in their health care and changing health needs.

Fall always brings busy schedules as the kiddos return to school. As I think back about those days in my home, I remember how challenging the "early mornings" and packed evenings can be. One of the most important things for a smooth transition is an improved FAMILY sleep schedule (Yes, Mom and Dad...for you too!)
After checking in with WebMD.com, I thought I'd share
sleep hour recommendations I found for specific ages:
1-3 years old: 12-14 hours (including naps)
3-6 years old: 10-12 hours
7-12 years old: 10-11 hours
12-18 years old: 8-9 hours
The article I saw didn't have specific information for Mom and Dad. Everything I've read in recent years, sleep recommendations for adults are similar to the 12-18 year old group.

Intuition about our kids is one of the most valuable tools we have as a parent! Following it can help prevent unnecessary pain or suffering for our kids in the future.
Earlier this week, I met a mom who was concerned following an couch-jumping injury her young son had in the spring. He wasn't regularly complaining about pain, and had good spinal movement. However, she noticed that he often readjusted his position and attempted to "crack" his spine when he was sitting to watch tv and play video games. Before his injury 4 months ago, he didn't do either of these things. He was treated by a couple healthcare professionals that encouraged her to believe that this was just his "new normal" and that it was nothing to be concerned about.
When I met him there were restrictions in the soft tissue, joint and spinal cord in addition to compensation patterns that likely would have caused pain and spinal dysfunction in the days ahead. This mom is so glad that she was not easily discouraged from following her intuition! Good job, Momma!
